Mindset, Heartset, and Bodyset: The Triad of Personal Growth and Alignment
We talk a lot about mindset, don't we? It's that mental framework, the cognitive awareness, and the perception that set us up for success in our daily lives. We've heard this term for a while now, and it’s often tied to personal growth, overcoming challenges, and achieving goals. Carol Dweck’s groundbreaking theory on mindset proposes that individuals possess either a fixed or growth mindset. A fixed mindset sees abilities as innate, unchangeable traits, while a growth mindset believes that abilities can evolve through effort, learning, and resilience. It’s a concept that can profoundly influence how we tackle obstacles and embrace change.
But what if there’s more to our personal development than just the mind? What if our heart and body also play essential roles in how we experience life, pursue growth, and respond to challenges?
Recently, I’ve been gifted with the opportunity to explore two new concepts that I believe deserve more attention: Heartset and Bodyset. Both of these ideas have the potential to complement and enrich our understanding of mindset, and together, they form a powerful trifecta for personal alignment and growth.
Heartset: The Power of Heart-Mind Coherence
When we talk about heart-mind coherence, we can’t discuss it without first considering the heart. While we often focus on the cognitive functions of the brain, the heart has its own wisdom and influence. It plays an integral role in shaping our emotional and psychological experiences.
Psychologically speaking, we’ve all heard of the term "broken heart syndrome." This condition, known medically as takotsubo cardiomyopathy, is a temporary heart condition that is often triggered by intense emotional stress. It can mimic the symptoms of a heart attack and is believed to be caused by an overwhelming surge of stress hormones, which can temporarily weaken the heart's ability to pump. This phenomenon shows us just how intimately the heart is connected to our emotional and psychological states.
But it’s not just in moments of distress that the heart makes its impact. The heart also contains a vast network of neurotransmitters—chemical messengers like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin—that help regulate mood, stress, and emotional well-being. In fact, the heart’s ability to influence our mind is so profound that it’s been referred to as the “second brain.” The concept of heart-mind coherence focuses on the alignment between the heart and the mind, fostering emotional balance and clarity.
In practical terms, when we practice heartset, we focus on bringing our emotions into balance with our thoughts, creating a harmonious state of being. This involves cultivating positive emotions such as compassion, gratitude, and love, which can directly influence our cognitive processes and physical well-being. It’s a powerful reminder that our hearts are not just vessels of love and emotion—they are integral to our mental and physical health.
Bodyset: The Body Keeps Score
Now, let’s move on to Bodyset, a term that reflects the deep connection between our bodies and our experiences. This concept is something I’ve recently come to appreciate, and I owe much of this understanding to the groundbreaking work of Resmaa Menakem, the author of My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies. In his work, Menakem explores how historical trauma and racialized experiences are stored in the body and passed down generationally. His insights on somatic healing—focusing on body awareness and mindfulness—offer a powerful framework for understanding how our bodies carry emotional and cultural wounds. In his book, Menakem highlights how certain body sensations—like tension or stress—can signal trauma, and how healing begins by acknowledging and releasing these stored emotions.
Bodyset is about more than just physical fitness. It’s about the way our bodies hold onto emotions, memories, and stress, often unconsciously. Our muscles, tissues, and cells "remember" past experiences, and this can manifest in various physical symptoms, from chronic pain to tension, anxiety, and even autoimmune diseases. Menakem’s work helps us understand that healing begins when we are willing to engage with our bodies, release trapped emotions, and heal past trauma.
Another voice that contributes to our understanding of Bodyset is Bessel van der Kolk, the author of The Body Keeps the Score. His work emphasizes how trauma and emotional experiences are stored in the body and how healing requires not just mental shifts, but physical ones too. Van der Kolk’s research illustrates how trauma can be held in the body, influencing both our physical and mental health.
When we think about Bodyset, we need to consider not just our body’s ability to perform tasks or look a certain way, but its role in our emotional regulation and overall well-being. Bodyset asks us to listen to the signals our bodies send us—whether it’s tightness in our shoulders, knots in our stomach, or a heavy heart—and take action to heal and release these blockages.
Mind, Heart, and Body in Alignment: Can They All Be Set?
This brings us to an interesting question: Can we proceed in life when our mind and body are ready, but our heart isn't? Or, is it possible for our heart to be set and our body or mind still lagging behind?
In a way, it’s like trying to run a race with mismatched gears. Mindset might be telling you to push forward, and Bodysetmight be fully aligned with physical health and vitality, but if your Heartset is still wounded, unhealed, or out of sync, your progress may be hindered.
Likewise, what happens if your heart is set—full of love, compassion, and openness—but your mind is still stuck in old limiting beliefs or your body is carrying unresolved trauma or tension? It’s like setting out with a full heart but dragging the weight of the past behind you.
In both cases, true growth and success require all three components—Mindset, Heartset, and Bodyset—to work in harmony. Without this balance, it becomes more difficult to move forward in a sustainable way.
The Path to Alignment: Integrating Mindset, Heartset, and Bodyset
So, how can we start to integrate these three powerful components of personal development? Here are a few ideas:
Mindset: Cultivate a growth mindset by embracing challenges, seeking learning opportunities, and celebrating progress over perfection.
Heartset: Practice heart-mind coherence through mindfulness, meditation, and emotional awareness. Cultivate emotional intelligence and build your emotional resilience.
Bodyset: Engage in practices that promote body awareness, such as yoga, dance, or body-focused therapies. Release physical tension and trauma through movement, breathwork, and healing modalities.
When all three—mind, heart, and body—are in alignment, they create a powerful foundation for growth, healing, and success. By acknowledging the role of the heart and body alongside the mind, we can begin to move forward with greater clarity, peace, and alignment, ensuring that every aspect of our being is ready to support our journey.
By embracing the idea that mindset alone is not enough, we open ourselves up to a deeper level of self-awareness and healing. As we explore the interconnectedness of Heartset and Bodyset, we can create a more holistic approach to personal growth that supports us physically, emotionally, and mentally.
So let us take a moment to tune in and ask our selves… are my mind, body, and heart in alignment? The real magic happens when all three are set and working together in harmony.
Affirmations for Befriending the Body
This month’s theme is Befriending the Body, an invitation to listen, honor, and reconnect with ourselves in deeper, more compassionate ways. Our bodies are constantly communicating with us, offering wisdom, signals, and stories. But in a world that often disconnects us from that inner knowing, it’s easy to forget that we are allowed to trust, cherish, and embrace our bodies exactly as they are.
Affirmations can be a powerful way to rebuild this trust. They are not just words—we embody them when we choose to believe in our own worth, when we listen to our needs, and when we practice self-care without guilt. Befriending the body means shifting from control to collaboration, from judgment to curiosity, and from neglect to nourishment.
